French-Beninese designer Romance Vlavonou was born in Metz, France, a border city where languages, cultures, and histories intersect. Absorbing the elegance of her mother and grandmothers, the beauty rituals of Black women within her community, and the intricate details of architecture, art, and adornment.
That understanding birthed Rekia & Joséphine in 2023, a response to a lifetime of seeing Black beauty relegated to the margins of product design and image-making. Rooted in the elegance of her mother and grandmothers—women embodying grace, ritual, and strength—the name is a tribute to lineage and legacy.
